M62 Junction 18: Simister Island, Bury
M62 J18: Simister Interchange is where the eastern section of the M62 begins, and where three motorways meet: the M60 Manchester ring road, the M66 heading north towards Bury, and the M62 heading north-east towards Rochdale, Leeds and Hull.
It is a very symmetrical junction. Seen from above, it is almost a circle, an inner ring of slip roads with an almost straight cross running through the middle and connecting roads curving smoothly round each edge.
The junction sits just north of Heaton Park Reservoir, about half a mile south, and the wider Heaton Park, about a mile south, with Heaton Hall and the Heaton Park Animal Centre. Simister, Kirkhams and Unsworth are beside it, and Whitefield lies about a mile and a half west.
Coming from Liverpool? The western M62 ends at Eccles (J12); follow the M60 north to here to pick up the M62 again. Moto Birch Services is about two miles north-east, and Heywood Interchange (J19) about three miles north-east.
